Alfred Lion was perhaps the most influential musician in the history of jazz. He took over Le Jazz à Poisson rouge as artistic director in 1957, worked with musicians like Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, and Charles Mingus, and by the end of the 1960s was running Columbia Records. Lion also became a fixture on the international jazz scene. He and his wife, Maria, were close to the legendary guitarist Django Reinhardt, whom they represented in the US and helped to arrange his return to Europe in 1969. They also took an active interest in the artistic developments in other mediums. When Jazz à Poisson rouge shut down in 1971, Lion and Alain Corneau set up the own label, Obscure Records, to represent the new wave of young musicians that was emerging at the time. For the first two years of the label, the US public heard a selection of young musicians—Jemeel Moondoc, Robert Lockwood, Jr., Cecil McBee, Fred Hopkins, Howard Alden, and Mark Murphy—and as the labels reputation grew, it attracted the attention of the mainstream jazz market. Jazz à Poisson rouge's most famous artist was Albert Mangelsdorff, who gained a cult following in his own right after leaving the label. Lion and his wife became close friends with Reinhardt, and he went on to record for both ECM and Blue Note. Lion's musical focus shifted over the years, but during the 1970s he was still a leading figure in the jazz world. He died in 1995, but his influence endures. Keyboard and Piano Music, Vol. 1.
